How to reset automation groups to zero

Reset student behavior counters for one automation group or all groups.

Overview

Resetting an automation group to zero moves students back to the starting point of the automation sequence for that group. Schools most commonly do this at the end of a quarter or semester when policies reset (for example, a tardy policy). You’ll learn how to reset all automation groups at once, how to reset a single automation group, and how to schedule recurring resets using Reset Counter Automatically.

Permission Level: Owner | District Manager

In this article:
Reset all automation groups: You can permanently reset all automation counters across Minga from the Minga Resets page.
Reset one automation group: You can reset counters for a single automation group for all students or a filtered selection.
Schedule automatic resets: You can enable Reset Counter Automatically and set a frequency aligned with your term dates.

Important: A full reset from Minga Resets is permanent once confirmed.

How to use automation counter resets

You can reset counters from either a global reset page (all automation groups) or from inside a specific automation group (one group, targeted students).

How to update all automation groups back to zero

You can reset ALL automation groups to zero by using the global reset option in Settings.

Step-by-step guide to resetting all automation groups to zero

  1. Navigate to Settings
    ○ Open the admin settings area for your Minga environment.

  2. Click the Settings tab
    ○ The Settings tab contains system-level configuration options.

  3. Click Minga Resets
Minga Resets contains reset actions that affect system-wide data.

  4. Click Reset next to Automation Counters
    ○ This action resets all student behavior counters back to 0 for every automation group.

  5. Confirm the reset when prompted
    ○ The confirmation prompt warns that resetting all automation counters is permanent.

Important: Resetting Automation Counters from Minga Resets resets all automation groups, not just one policy (for example, it resets tardies and any other automation group counters).

How to update specific automation groups back to zero

You can reset ONE automation group to zero by opening the automation group in BehaviorsAutomations and setting the counter value to 0.

Step-by-step guide to resetting one automation group to zero

  1. Navigate to Behaviors.
Behaviors is where automation groups are created and managed.

  2. Click the Automations tab.
    ○ The Automations tab lists each automation group (for example, a tardy policy automation group).

  3. Select the automation group you want to reset.
    ○ Open the automation group whose student counters should return to the starting step.

  4. Click the Edit icon (pen/pencil) in the top right corner.
    ○ The automation group opens in edit mode so counter reset options can be configured.

  5. Use the manual counter reset dropdown to choose who to reset.
    ○ Select All Students to reset everyone in that automation group to 0.
    ○ Select Select Students to reset a filtered set of students.

  6. Filter and select students (only for Select Students).
    ○ Filter by Grade, Role, List, or Group, then click Apply filters.
    ○ Select the students you want to reset, then click Select.

  7. Enter 0 in Automation Counter Value.
    ○ Entering 0 resets the behavior count for the triggering behavior back to zero for the students you selected.

  8. Click Update.
    ○ Minga applies the new counter value, placing the selected students at step 0 for that automation group.

Tip: Resetting students to step 0 means the next occurrence of the triggering behavior assigns the first step consequence in your sequence (for example, the first tardy assigns a Tardy Warning).

How to schedule automatic resets for an automation group

You can schedule recurring resets for an automation group so counters reset automatically at set times (for example, at the start of each semester).

Step-by-step guide to scheduling automatic resets for an automation group

  1. Navigate to BehaviorsAutomations and open the automation group
    ○ Use the same automation group you want to reset on a schedule.

  2. Click the Edit icon (pen/pencil)
    ○ Edit mode shows reset scheduling settings.

  3. Locate Reset Counter Automatically and toggle it on
    ○ Turning this on enables scheduling options.

  4. Set the reset Frequency
    ○ Choose a frequency option that matches your policy calendar.

  5. Configure a custom schedule (recommended for term-based policies)
    ○ Select Custom and enter your semester dates so the schedule matches your school term.

  6. Set the reset time to 12:01 am
    ○ The provided best practice is 12:01 am so resets occur outside school operating hours.

Important: Automatic resets affect only the automation group where Reset Counter Automatically is enabled, not all automation groups.

Troubleshooting

Issue: The wrong automation group was reset.
Solution: You can avoid repeat mistakes by confirming the automation group name in BehaviorsAutomations before clicking the Edit icon and applying a manual reset.

Issue: Students are still receiving higher-step consequences after a reset.
Solution: You can confirm the reset applied by reopening the automation group and checking that Automation Counter Value was updated to 0 for the intended students.

Issue: Automatic resets are not happening on the expected date.
Solution: You can correct the schedule by opening the automation group in BehaviorsAutomations, clicking the Edit icon, confirming Reset Counter Automatically is on, and verifying Frequency, date range (for Custom), and time (example best practice: 12:01 am).

Issue: You need to reset only one grade level or group, not everyone.
Solution: You can reset a targeted set of students by choosing Select Students, filtering by Grade, Role, List, or Group, clicking Apply filters, and then updating Automation Counter Value to 0.
