How to Set Up a New Consequence

You can define what happens after a behavior is logged by creating a Consequence. This allows you to standardize rewards for Praise or disciplinary actions for Guidance behaviors.

Step-by-step guide to Creating a Consequence

  1. Navigate to the Behavior are using the main navigation sidebar.

  2. Click the Consequences tab located at the top of the screen.

  3. Click the Create consequence button in the top right corner.

  4. Select either Praise or Guidance for the Consequence. Praise if it is a positive Consequence, or Guidance if it is a constructive Consequence.

  5. Enter the Consequence Name.

  6. Select the Type of Consequence from the drop-down.
    • For Praise: Notification or Other.
    • For Guidance: Detention, Referral, Warning, or Other.

  7. Optional: Enter an Internal Description to clearly identify the outcome for staff.

  8. If the Consequence is time-bound (Detention or Referral), toggle on Enable due date. This will allow a due date to be entered when the consequence is issued manually or through an automation.

  9. Select an Icon and Icon Color if you wish.

  10. Optional: Add a point value to award or subtract from the student upon being assigned the Consequence.

  11. Toggle on Enable action for overdue consequence if you would like to either add another consequence or escalate a consequence if the original is not completed by the due date.

  12. Toggle the Add Notes to Consequence switch to On if you want staff to provide extra context when this is assigned. (Check out How to escalate overdue consequences or assign additional consequences automatically for more details.)

  13. Under the heading Consequence restriction, when toggled on, you can select who will be able to assign this Consequence manually through MyTools or MyClass instead of relying on an automation group. You can restrict by:
    • Role
    • User List
    • Group
    • Grade

    • or specific People

  14. You can also opt to Assign or remove a sticker when the Consequence is assigned.

  15. Toggle Parent Notifications to On if you want an automated email sent to the student's family immediately.

  16. Click Create and your Consequence will be live and ready to use.

Pro Tip: You can customize the specific text of the email notifications sent to parents to include school-specific instructions or contact information.

How to Set Up and Configure Behavior Automations

Automations remove the manual work of tracking how many times a behavior has occurred. You can set the system to trigger a consequence automatically once a student hits a specific threshold.

Additional Features or Settings

You can further refine your behavior system by utilizing custom email templates. Owners and Managers can adjust the language in parent notifications for both behaviors and consequences to ensure the tone matches the school's brand.

Customized Parent Emails Description:

This feature allows you to edit the "Subject" and "Body" of the emails sent to guardians. This is highly recommended for providing clarity on where a student needs to report for a consequence. For a step-by-step on this, check out How to enable parent notifications for behaviors.
