Moderating Content in Your Minga Community

Learn how to report posts, review them, and manage blocked content.

Maintaining a safe and positive environment is essential for any school community. This guide will walk you through how to use Minga's moderation tools to handle AI-flagged posts, respond to user reports, and manually delete inappropriate content. By learning these settings, you can ensure your feed remains a productive and safe space for all students and staff.

Permission Level: Owner | Manager

Moderation Overview & Features

Minga features a Moderation menu for Owners and Managers. From here, All Posts, community Reported Content and Direct Messages (if enabled) can be reviewed easily. The moderation menu visually explains the status of all content posted in a Minga with icons.

Green Check Mark

The content is live and published on your schools Minga.

Yellow Exclamation Mark

The content has been reported but is still live.

Red Trash Icon

Removed, flagged or filtered content that is not live.

There are multiple layers of review to keep the content on your Minga safe, appropriate, and positive:

Artificial Intelligence (MingaAI) Filtering

All submitted content to be posted everywhere within a Minga is scanned by two different AI Engines (Sift Ninja and Google Vision) for:

  • inappropriate and offensive language and emoji's

  • bullying, racist, violent or sexual language and content

  • images that have offensive, adult or violent content

  • text within images that is not appropriate

The AI moderation errs on the side of caution. Because of this, the moderation engine may inadvertently flag content that isn't actually offensive/inappropriate.

Instant Deletion by Admin

In the event that our filters do not catch content that should not be posted to your Minga, any elevated role (Owner or Manager) can immediately delete that content from your Minga using the context menu on the post itself.

Community Reporting

In some cases, a Minga member (students or staff roles) may not feel that content is appropriate and can therefore report that content. All reported content is instantly flagged for review within the Moderation Menu (Home>Moderation>Reported Content). When content is reported, an Owner or Manager is notified.

They can see the following:

  • That content has been reported

  • Who reported it

  • The reason it was reported

The Owner or Manager can then take the action (Keep & Resolve or Delete & Resolve) they see fit.

Moderation Settings

Owners can decide how the moderation engine behaves when it detects potentially offensive or inappropriate language and images.

Step-By-Step Guide

  1. Click the Settings gear icon in the primary (left) navigation menu.

  2. Select the Settings tab from the top horizontal menu.

  3. Locate and expand the Moderation section to view toggle options.

Choose your blocking level: You can configure how strictly the AI blocks content based on three main states:

  • Strict Blocking (Recommended): Enable both "Block Offensive Content" and "Enable Warnings." All flagged content is automatically blocked from being posted.

  • User Override: Disable content blocking but keep warnings enabled. Flagged content will show an "uh-oh" warning to the user, but they can choose to post it anyway.

  • No Moderation: Disable both options. This stops all warnings and filtering. Note: This option is not recommended as it leaves your community unprotected.

Review Reported Content

On Minga, any member can report content. Reporting content is a way to flag or notify an Owner or Manager that something posted in their Minga may not be appropriate.

When content is reported, the Owner or Manager will receive a notification. At that point, they should review the reported post and determine which action should be taken.

  • Delete & Resolve: this will delete the content from your Minga and mark the report as resolved (you will be prompted to confirm this action)

  • Keep & Resolve: this will keep the content live in your Minga and mark the report as resolved

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Go to Home > Moderation > Reported Content in your Minga

  2. You will see additional buttons for lists of unresolved and resolved reports.

  3. Each reported post captures:

    1. The unresolved post Type

    2. The User who posted the content

    3. The date and time the content was posted

    4. The reporter(s) of the content

    5. The date and time the content was reported by each reporter

Publishing Blocked Content

The Minga AI Moderation Filter is very good at detecting things you DON'T want on your Minga, but in some cases, it may accidentally block pictures or posts that you'd like published. Owners and Managers can override situations where unwanted or unwarranted filtering occurs.

When content is blocked, the author will receive a message that reads:

"Uh oh. It looks like something you want to share might not be appropriate."

Once that happens, the content will be sent to the Moderation tab, where it will be marked with a red trash icon. From there an Owner or Manager can choose to manually publish it anyway.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Navigate to the Moderation page in Minga by clicking Home > Moderation > All Posts

  2. Content is organized into All, Published and Deleted categories

  3. Look for the content that has been blocked (deleted) by moderation that you would like to publish

  4. Once you have reviewed the content and are satisfied it is safe to publish, click on the Context Menu (three little dots) and select Publish

When you return to the Moderation page you will see the content has been Published and is live in your Minga (noted by the green check mark). You will also see a publishing history of the post, showing that it had been deleted by Minga and later published.

Deleting Content

Content deletion is quick and easy by right-clicking the content or clicking the content menu (the ellipsis or 3 dots on the top right of any post). You will always be prompted with a confirmation message before the content is permanently deleted.

There are two levels of permission for content deletion:

  • The poster of any content can always delete the content

  • Owners or Managers can delete any content instantly

Some post types (like Events), require viewing the full content card to access the content menu.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Locate the post: You can delete content directly from the main feed or within a specific group.

  2. Click the Context Menu (three dots) in the top right corner of the post.

  3. Click the Delete option.

  4. Select Confirm on the pop-up message to permanently remove the content.

You can right-click on most post types to bring up the edit and delete menu.

FAQs

Who can see who reported a post?

Only users with Owner or Manager permissions can see the identity of the person who submitted a report in the Moderation tab.

What happens if I disable all moderation settings?

If you disable both blocking and warnings, your Minga will not filter any content or notify users of potential violations. We strongly recommend keeping at least one layer of moderation active.

Can I delete an event?

Yes, you can delete an event by clicking into the full event card first to access the Context Menu (three dots).

Troubleshooting

I published a blocked post but it isn't appearing.

Try refreshing your browser or app. If the post had a "Deleted" status previously, it may take a moment to cycle back into the live feed based on its original timestamp.

A user is complaining they can't post an image.

The Google Vision AI may be detecting "hidden" text or objects in the image it deems inappropriate. You can find this image in your Moderation > Deleted tab to manually review and publish it if it is safe.
